Rapid Deployment of Low-Cost Wireless Monitoring Solution for Smart Building

Radu Nicolae Pietraru, Robert-Alexandru Crăciun, Daniel-Marian Merezeanu · 2024

This paper proposes a solution for monitoring environmental parameters for smart buildings with fast implementation and low cost. The solution proposes an IoT (Internet of Things) architecture based on the SoC WiFi ESP8266 microprocessor for air quality monitoring devices and on the ThingsBoard open-source IoT platform for storing, processing and viewing measured data. The parameters measured by the monitoring devices are the ambient temperature and humidity as well as the concentration of total volatile organic compounds. The speed of implementation is based on the use of the IEEE 802.11 infrastructure already existing in the building. The solution is tested through an implementation in a building of the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest. The presented solution represents an effort of more than two years of testing and improvement.
