Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are essential in future grids. Being less constrained by location, distributed BESSs (D-BESSs) can be installed near the demand to enhance resilience. When D-BESSs are considered during the network planning phase, distribution and transmission networks resilience can be enhanced with minimum or no additional cost as this paper explains. A key enabler for harnessing the benefit of these D-BESSs is to effectively manage their operation through distributed control architecture where local microgrid controllers can provide significant support. In this paper, a scheme to size, dispatch, and control D-BESSs is proposed such that the associated use cases of these resources can effectively be attained to support the stable operation of future power grids.
