The Industrial Revolution

THE title of our chapter is the term generally applied to the change-over from a general practice of handicrafts in industry to a system of manufacture by the aid of steam-driven machines. It began, as we have seen, in England, about the year 1783; it continued throughout the first half of the 19th century. So much every history of modern times tells us; but many histories pass over in silence other changes, equally revolutionary, which were quietly taking place at the same period and in connexion with the development of power machinery.
