RIS Technology Integration with the 5G System: Challenges and Open Questions

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are emerging as a key technology to enhance the performance of 5G networks by enabling dynamic control over the wireless propagation environment. This paper explores the integration of RIS technology with the 5G system, highlighting the potential challenges associated with its deployment. We discuss critical issues and identify several open questions, including the need for standardized protocols, optimization techniques for multi-technology RIS scenarios, and the role of artificial intelligence in managing RIS-enhanced networks. These challenges and open questions need to be addressed to fully realize the full potential of RIS technology in next-generation wireless communication systems.
