Special Suffixes Control Time

Mary Ehrenworth · 2025

Lesson summary: In this session you&s;ll call students’ attention to a particular set of suffixes—the verb tense endings s, es, ed, ing . Ideally, you&s;ve already taught each of these as part of your sequence of suffixes, and here you review them with a new focus on how they are used to show time. You&s;ll invite students to join you in an inquiry, noticing how these suffixes help readers understand when something is happening in a story—they help writers show their readers about timing. Together, you&s;ll investigate verb endings in a snippet of a story.
