Modeling Musical Analysis

2024

Abstract Modeling Musical Analysis is a collection of essays written by minoritized scholars who model analytical writing that is both accessible for, and attainable by, undergraduate students. Approaches to rhythm and meter, timbre, form, harmony, musical meaning, pitch collections, performance and analysis, motive, narrative, humor, serialism, music and dance, and queer theory are all represented as applied to equally varied musics, including ballet, chamber music, film music, gospel music, musical theater, opera, oratorio, orchestral music, popular music, and vocal music. Each essay begins with a short autobiography of the author that foregrounds the author’s identity and encourages the reader to connect with the humanity of the author. The volume proudly amplifies the voices of a broad range of scholars who represent, among other things, diverse cultures, sexualities, gender identities, career stages, racial and ethnic identities, and parental statuses. Scholarship taught in the music theory classroom is currently dominated by one particular cultural reality, and Modeling Musical Analysis is a step toward changing that paradigm.
