Abstract Traditionally, the unavoidable interaction between tour guides and tourists during extraordinary circumstances, particularly COVID-19, significantly increases the risk of disease transmission. To address this concern, this research, grounded in real-world scenarios, developed an intelligent guide robot utilizing an autonomous mobile platform. The robot’s modules were encapsulated as Robot Operating System (ROS) nodes, facilitating seamless communication through ROS’s distributed messaging framework. The research group designed a LiDAR-based intelligent guide robot, carefully analyzing its hardware configuration, path planning algorithms, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques, integrating these components through ROS’s distributed communication system. A comprehensive system platform was then established, rigorously tested through simulations, and validated with physical demonstrations. Experimental results conclusively demonstrate that the designed robot effectively achieves its intended objectives.
