Text Engineering

Larry Ferlazzo, Katie Hull Sypnieski · 2025

Text engineering is a concept to make design changes to the complex texts to further enhance their accessibility. This kind of accessibility can be supported by strategies like enlarging the text, including bold-faced subtitles, adding images, creating more white space around it where students can write notes, adding vocabulary definitions, etc. Studies have clearly shown that teachers reviewing text prior to teaching it, identifying words and features that might be challenging to their ELL students, and then annotating the text in ways to make it more accessible is an effective method to develop the academic language skills of students. Engineering texts will help students achieve any or all of the reading standards. As we are in the age of artificial intelligence, we can create two or three engineered texts manually, feed them to an AI chatbot, and ask it to create similarly designed ones for our desired topics.
