Review on DDOS Attacks in IOT Networks

T E Ramya · Power System Technology · 2024

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are harmful effort to disrupt standard networks, servers, or service operations by flooding the system with excessive Internet traffic. A DDoS attack sends a lot of traffic to the target at once utilizing several hacked computers or devices ("botnets"), robbing genuine users of their service. More connectivity and convenience across a range of industries has resulted from the widespread use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. IoT networks are vulnerable to attacks due to their inherent vulnerabilities, and one major danger is DDoS attacks. In the previous papers several techniques were used to find the DDoS attacks in IoT, but did not provide sufficient results. To find effective solution and to prevent DDoS in IoT this review was presented. In this manuscript, a review on DDoS attacks in IoT networks, analyse DDoS attacks detection, prevention and mitigation in IoT and analyse preventive measures for how to mitigate the attacks in IoT devices is presented. For this, first review various types of DDoS attacks and the attack detection methods in IoT network, secondly review the classification of DDoS attacks using attack detection methods. Thirdly, review the preventing and mitigating techniques used in the IoT. Lastly, discuss the primary components of defence mechanisms that are employed to detect, prevent, and mitigate attacks. Their benefits and drawbacks were also examined in order to help prevent attacks on the Internet of Things. Furthermore, challenges, and future directions for securing IoT networks against DDoS attacks were discussed. In this, review total 86 papers are taken based on the DDoS attacks in IoT networks, from these 11 papers are reviewed based on the types of DDoS attacks and 15 papers are reviewed based on the classification of DDoS attacks, remaining papers are reviewed based on the DDoS attack detection, prevention and mitigation in IoT. In this, the research articles published between 2020 and early 2024 were taken into consideration for this study.
