Exploring the Potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Large Screen Interaction in Map Assistance

Xinyue Zhang, Paul Craig · 2024

As the functionality and performance of mid-range smartphones have improved dramatically over the past 10 or 15 years, the potential for using such devices to support more advanced graphically demanding applications such as interactive Augmented Reality (AR) using Information Visualization has increased. This paper looks at the potential of such AR to improve public service maps and the combination of mobile AR and large displays using the case study of a simple map for campus navigation. We implement a simple application that augments the original map’s functionality by allowing users to interact with the map to highlight additional information on selected items. A user evaluation of our application demonstrates that users appreciate the added value of the AR application and see its potential to enhance their experience of campus navigation. This demonstrates the potential of augmented reality for public navigation systems.
