BICAFD: Blockchain based Image Content Authentication and Forgery Detection

Jayanti Rout, Minati Mishra · 2024

In recent years, there has been a significant surge in the popularity and speed of research on digital image processing, leading researchers to suggest a variety of image authenticity verification procedures. In the same way, blockchain technology has recently gained popularity. In this research, a novel image authenticity verification method based on the blockchain’s Merkle tree methodology is proposed. The Merkle tree root offers a dependable environment for storing image information in blockchain and can be used for image authenticity verification to verify each image and determine the hash of each Merkle tree node along the path. This technique also integrates the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) to increase image availability. The main objective of this paper is to verify the integrity of the images using blockchain. Moreover, the proposed technology effectively localizes the tampered areas of the image and restores it to its original form. Every blockchain network node carries out the verification process. The experiment’s results demonstrate that the suggested model is effective in achieving the objectives of establishing image authenticity, tampered-area localization, and restoration of the original image.
