Smart Notes Assistance Program, A Learning Mode

This paper presents the data development and classroom evaluation of a help system for students in an introductory college physics course using Livescribe's Pulse™ smartpen technology. This evaluation uses a digital notebook approach for students so that all the supporting help information for a semester is text-searchable from one screen. This is in contrast to the pencast format which does not allow text searching or text searching across pencasts. The current approach presented in this paper offers significant student benefits in terms of speed and utility compared to the same data in pencast format. Objective: To provide an alternative learning mode for audio learners, poor note takers, or any student who can benefit from an integrated note and audio help system.Assessment: Surveys were collected from all students in the class. The student's performance was also tracked and evaluated against the survey results. Results are also compared to other related studies. Conclusion: Of the students who used the program, 87% stated it helped them learn the material and would recommend it to all students.Of the users, 25% stated that it raised their grade at least one letter. The evidence supports that low performing students found more grade benefit in using the program than more accomplished students.
