A Study of Remote Control Methods for Heterogeneous Smart Home Devices

Ryosei Takaki, Seiya Komonguchi, Hidekazu Suzuki · 2024

The new smart home standard Matter defines bridge devices that allow non-Matter devices to join the Matter network, and Matter controllers can also communicate with home appliances compliant with ECHONET Lite, the HEMS standard protocol in Japan. However, since the protocols used for Matter and non-Matter are different, it is difficult to completely map the two protocols, which means that only some non-Matter devices can be controlled from the Matter controller or some functions are limited. The authors have previously proposed the iHAC Hub, which enables integrated control of devices with different communication standards. In this paper, we investigate a method to remotely control heterogeneous smart home devices from outside the home in a mixed Matter and non-Matter home environment.
