Detecting Distributed Denial of Service Attacks in Software Defined Network Controllers: Proposed Research

Etidal Altom Kunna, Mohd Nizam Omar, Mohamad Fadli Zolkipli · 2024

This paper addresses the security vulnerabilities in Software Defined Networking (SDN), which separates the network control plane from the data plane. A significant concern is the vulnerability of the SDN controller to Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which can disrupt or collapse the entire network. To tackle this issue, a hybrid detection is proposed to detect and mitigate DDoS attacks in two phases. The effectiveness of proposed hybrid detection will be evaluated using the Mininet simulator, with a focus on detection rate and false positive rates and compared to existing DDoS detection techniques. Following the Design Research Methodology (DRM) approach, the research will develop and implement hybrid to enhance SDN network security. The findings are expected to demonstrate the mechanism's ability to protect the SDN controller from DDoS attacks, contributing to the overall resilience of SDN architectures. As mentioned in the title, this paper only focused on the proposed research that to be conducted based on the explained literature review.
