An Improved Software Complexity Metric Based on Cyclomatic Complexity

L. H. A. N. N. Buddhadasa · 2024

This paper introduces the Improved Cyclomatic Complexity (ICC) metric, which integrates traditional Cyclomatic Complexity with structural factors such as the number of functions, executable statements, inputs, outputs, and total lines of code. The ICC metric provides a more comprehensive assessment of software complexity, addressing the limitations of the CC metric. The study compares the performance of the ICC metric against the CC metric using a set of Java programs, demonstrating ICC's ability to offer deeper insights into maintainability, reliability, and risk areas within a codebase. The results highlight ICC's potential to enhance software quality evaluation, contributing significantly to the body of knowledge with its technical soundness and practical applications. The implications of this research suggest that ICC can lead to the development of higher-quality software systems by improving complexity management practices.
