From challenges to opportunities: the impact of emerging technologies on enhancing organizational memory systems

José Antônio Afonso Nonato, Gilberto Perez · International Journal of Scientific Management and Tourism · 2025

Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and enterprise social media are revolutionizing organizational memory systems by overcoming significant historical challenges. Traditional systems struggle to capture tacit knowledge, manage dynamic information, and integrate dispersed sources. AI advances in natural language processing and machine learning automate the capture of tacit knowledge, bridging the gap between explicit and implicit understanding. Blockchain technology addresses data integrity and traceability, creating a secure, decentralized platform that preserves organizational knowledge over time. Meanwhile, enterprise social media enhances collaborative knowledge sharing, enabling seamless transfer and retention through transactive memory systems. These technologies collectively transform organizational memory from a static repository to a dynamic tool for decision-making and innovation. Despite these advancements, addressing ethical implications, governance challenges, and cultural adaptations necessary for effective implementation is crucial. Future research should explore the balance between technological reliance and human cognitive processes to fully harness these technologies, ensuring ethical standards and mitigating potential biases in organizational memory development.
