Cryptographic Systems

Keith M. Martin · 2025

Cryptography provides mathematically based tools for providing the core security services necessary to secure any digital system. In this chapter, we introduce the most important of these tools, explaining precisely what security services they provide and in which digital systems they are best deployed. Importantly, cryptography must always be considered as a component of a more complex system, since the main weaknesses in cryptographic deployments do not normally arise from the cryptographic tools themselves, but rather how these are integrated into the wider system. We discuss relevant aspects of a cryptographic system where vulnerabilities often arise before presenting some case studies and looking toward future challenges.
