The metaverse in light of the CISG
Mónica Lastiri Santiago, Pilar Perales Viscasillas · 2025
This chapter examines the operation of the metaverse considering the 1980 Vienna Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). As the metaverse becomes an increasingly relevant space in the digital economy, there arises a need to scrutinize how the principles and legal provisions established in the Vienna Convention are applied to commercial transactions conducted within this virtual environment. Further, this chapter sets out on the path towards understanding the virtual world that is beginning to settle in web 3.0 and explaining the birth, progress, and some of the legal issues that are already present in the metaverse. The legal implications of commercial interactions in the metaverse are explored, considering the challenges and opportunities that arise in the application of the Vienna Convention in this emerging context.
