Smart cities use technology to build effective infrastructure, increase sustainability, and enhance the overall standards of urban life. Concerns about public safety, energy usage, management of waste, traffic congestion, and other issues are becoming more pressing as population grows. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative instrument to propel these endeavors. An overview of AI methods used in the framework of smart cities is presented in this chpater. The creative application of AI has a direct connection to the conversion of urban environments into smart cities. Managing issues like disposal of waste, energy consumption, traffic congestions, and public safety becomes critical as urban areas grow. AI is essential for energy management because it integrates renewable energies for sustainable strategies, in addition to monitoring and allocating energy as per the demand. AI-enabled surveillance tools provide law enforcement with a proactive advantage by quickly identifying anomalies, thereby improving safety. Furthermore, potential hotspots for crime are located using predictive analytics of AI. City administrations use AI-powered chatbots to facilitate better communication and guarantee that inquiries of citizens are promptly answered. This chapter offers perspectives on new technologies and preparation for impending technology changes in urban planning. AI’s consequences for the development of smart cities is also discussed.
