The Relationship Between the Use of Summarization Strategies and Summarization Self-Efficacy Perception: A Study on Secondary School Students

Aim of the study is to examine relationship between summary self-efficacy perceptions of middle school students and frequency of their use of summary strategies. Relational screening model was used in the study. Study was conducted with a total of 300 middle school students. Data were collected using the “Summary Self-Efficacy Perception Scale” and the “Summary Strategies Questionnaire”. According to results, students’ use of reading comprehension strategies, creating a draft summary, and reviewing and correcting the draft summary text was at a “high” level. It was seen that grade level had a moderate effect on the frequency of using reading comprehension strategies. A significant difference was found between reading comprehension strategy scores of students and fifth grade students. It was determined that participants’ self-efficacy levels for summarizing, writing a summary, and summarizing were high. It was concluded that grade level had a low effect on their summary self-efficacy. there was a high level, positive and significant relationship between students’ self-efficacy perception and their frequency of using summarizing strategies.
