The ongoing gradual substitution of conventional fossil fuel-based power plants with Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) contributes to reducing the overall available rotational inertia in the system, which, in turn, may lead to significant frequency variations and increase the risk of a system collapse. Monitoring the overall system inertia helps Transmission System Operators (TSOs) ensure the inertia level of the system within the security boundary. In this vein, this paper provides a novel inertial security region on-line monitoring platform considering the effect of virtual inertia. Firstly, the paper analyzes the frequency evolution characteristics of power systems with the inclusion of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) and extracts frequency security indicators. Subsequently, an inertia security region model is constructed considering the proportion of rotational inertia and frequency security. Finally, a novel inertial security region on-line monitoring platform for grids is developed based on the simulation data. The proposed platform enables real-time monitoring of grid inertia security regions, system frequency stability, and overall system operation, which facilitates the timely identification of potential risks in the system.
