This chapter will demonstrate modern cybersecurity practices at a high level and highlight where the processes are manually performed that are slow, expensive, and less than ideal. We will explore the penetration testing concepts at a high level, introduce some essential tools and methodologies, and cover how the reinforcement learning (RL) models presented in this book can streamline the process and better aid the security professional. This introduction sets the foundation for applying the more advanced RL concepts and code implementation detailed in later chapters. By the end of this chapter, you should grasp red and blue team functions, how each plays a role in providing greater cybersecurity for their clients, and how the current process can be enhanced using strategic RL techniques.
