A Review on the Progress of Text-based Image Retrieval Technology

In the context of the rapid growth of multimedia data, the importance of text-based image retrieval technology has become increasingly prominent and is widely applied in numerous fields. To promote the development of this technology, this paper reviews the text-based image retrieval technology in recent years. Firstly, the basic principle of text-based image retrieval is elaborated. Then, the main methods of text-based image retrieval are introduced with emphasis, including methods based on traditional features, deep learning methods, multimodal fusion methods, and so on. Finally, this paper also discusses the typical applications of text-based image retrieval technology in image search engines, social media, Electronic Commerce, education and teaching, and the identification and retrieval of details in pictures, and points out the challenges such as the cross-modal semantic gap, large-scale data processing, and real-time requirements.
