A Review on Machine Learning Based Techniques for MQTT Based Attacks for the IoT Systems

IoT is one of the prominent areas within the discipline of cybersecurity. The rising reliance on automated systems and the lack of IDS for specific network activities are the key factors. Several lightweight protocols are being proposed for IoT system communication. MQTT is a modern IoT machine-to-machine communication protocol. The MQTT protocols publish-subscribe approach, diversity, and lack of security make it vulnerable to network attacks. Machine learning-based network communication threat detection has been extensively studied, however MQTT IoT networks still have some crucial gaps. In this paper a comprehensive review on MQTT based IoT attacks has been done along with its comparative evaluation based on the technique's employed, attacks considered and parameters evaluated. Moreover, limitations of the methods used by researchers in this context has also been elaborated.
