Enhancing Security in Data Exchange: Mitigating Risks Solutions in Base64 Encoding and JSON Web Tokens

Ambrozie Roxana Emanuela, Mihaela Gavrilă, Tâmiceriu Daniela · 2024

This paper evaluates the relationship between Base64 encoding and JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) in the context of authentication and authorization and proposes solutions for reducing security risks. JWTs, commonly used for secure data exchange as JSON objects, utilize Base64 encoding to ensure safe transmission. Analyzing Base64's impact on JWT tokens enhances our comprehension of securing sensitive data and enabling secure user sessions, while also addressing related risks. In our research, besides analyzing the interplay between Base64 encoding and JWTs we also propose effective measures to mitigate the risks involved. By addressing these vulnerabilities head-on, we enhance the security of sensitive data and foster secure user sessions. This research enhances secure token handling by adopting robust cryptographic standards, ensuring the confidentiality of signing secrets and employing JSON Web Encryption (JWE) to shield payloads from interception, thereby addressing gaps and enhancing security measures beyond existing literature.
