Exploring the Frontiers of Communication With Extended Reality (XR)

João A. Dias, Miguel Boavida, Jacinto Estima · Advances in linguistics and communication studies · 2024

Extended Reality (XR) is changing how we interact with digital information and communicate with each other by transforming how people experience and interact with their surroundings. It can be used to create immersive experiences like virtual tours or to promote companies, products, and brands. Although the industry and scientific community have improved recently, XR must overcome some issues to be fully deployed and understood in multiple areas. For example, it is essential to understand user experience guidelines to create realistic XR applications. Also, those applications require a lot of processing power, which can result in performance issues. Furthermore, integrating artificial intelligence opens a world of possibilities, presenting new research trends to explore. This chapter examines the definition of XR to demonstrate what it is possible to do with it, the emerging challenges, and how XR technologies can be applied to the communication field.
