Transforming Software Complexity Analysis with the ECB Metric
H. A. N. Nikeshala · 2024
This paper introduces the Extended CB (ECB) metric, a novel approach in software complexity analysis that addresses limitations in traditional metrics. The ECB metric extends the CB metric by incorporating additional cognitive complexity factors, such as compound expressions and try-catch blocks, providing a more comprehensive assessment of software complexity. This inclusion is a significant innovation, as it offers a nuanced understanding of the cognitive challenges involved in modern software development. The detailed comparative analysis between the CB and ECB metrics highlights the technical improvements and the higher complexity values reported by the ECB metric. These higher values accurately reflect the true cognitive load required for code comprehension and maintenance, leading to practical applications in project estimation, resource allocation, and quality assurance. The ECB metric is also valuable for educational tools, enhancing novice programmers' learning experiences. The potential impact of this research is substantial, promoting better software design, maintainability, and overall quality. Future research could further refine the ECB metric and expand its applicability across different programming paradigms and environments, broadening its utility and impact.
