Runtime localization of surface wear zones in industrial machines has been a daunting problem in the domain of predictive maintenance. Wear occurs due to the percussive impact and dynamic contact of a surface by another solid body. Spatial localization of impact sounds generated due to this phenomenon can help to locate the wear zones. Furthermore, most of these machines are rotating (e.g. grinding mills) / moving (e.g. crushers) in nature. This necessitates non-contact sensing outside the machine. In this work, a novel approach using a modified 2D beamforming algorithm has been presented that can localize non-coherent impact sound sources with RMSE localization error less than 10%.
