One of the trendiest and fastest-evolving issues in the world today is Software-Defined Networks (SDN), and another is big data processing. SDN stands for the separation of the control plane and the forwarding plane. Consequently, the controller and the forwarding parts are no longer housed together in the same box. Big data technology aids in the processing of massive data volumes that conventional data processing technology would find difficult to handle. For almost ten years, SDN and big data have been developing. It is anticipated that the union of these two in recent years would result in a new trend in their respective traditional work methods. Although not brought together for particular scenarios, they had already been explored in a certain basic manner. SDN provides a number of benefits over conventional networking technologies. Processing massive data is aided by SDN. SDN is a methodology that routes traffic through the network using software-based controllers or application programming interfaces (APIs) that connect with the underlying hardware infrastructure. SDN aims to increase the programmability of networks. By using software programs that operate on top of the network operating system (NOS), network programmability is made possible. Big data is a type of data set that is too massive and complicated for conventional data management tools and processing techniques to handle. Big data applications require the help of the underlying network to function because of the amount and computational complexity of the data, especially for real-time applications. The big data network, which enables dispersed huge data applications, is therefore crucial for the approaching big data era. Due to the fact that big data apps are designed primarily to manage enormous files over the same networks, there are a number of issues that might arise during transmission. SDN may assist and result in considerable improvements in the management of large data transport. It is considerably simpler to gather, transmit, store, and handle massive data because of SDN’s exceptional qualities. The design and operation of SDN will be significantly impacted by big data, though. This chapter briefly examines the many characteristics of big data and its limitations, SDN for big data, the function of SDN, and the MapReduce approach.
