Background: Augmented reality (AR) merges the physical world with digital overlays, offering a new way to interact with environments. This technology has gained attention as a tool for enhancing experiences in areas like healthcare, education, and training, where it introduces virtual objects into real-world settings using advanced computational methods. The focus of this study was to examine how effective AR is in medical student training compared to traditional teaching methods. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to assess AR's effectiveness in medical training.A detailed literature search was performed across databases like the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. The quality of the studies was rigorously assessed using Cochrane's risk of bias criteria. Results: Fourteen studies were included in the analysis.Findings showed AR significantly improved task performance time, confidence, and satisfaction compared to standard approaches. However, it did not lead to notable gains in knowledge retention or skill development.Analysis indicated a growing trend in AR research without any significant publication bias in the analyzed studies. Conclusions: While AR demonstrates strong potential in boosting confidence, satisfaction, and task performance in medical education, its effects on learning retention and skill development are less pronounced. To draw firmer conclusions, future studies should involve larger and more varied participant groups.Broadening AR's use in medical training could reveal untapped opportunities for improving education outcomes.
