A subfield of operations research and mathematics known as matching theory studies how to pair pieces from two sets according to predetermined standards or preferences. This chapter examines the fundamental concepts of matching theory and its various applications in economics, computer science, healthcare, and transportation. Matching theory is primarily concerned with identifying agents or objects that correspond between two distinct sets, often with the goal of maximizing overall satisfaction or value. The theory encompasses several types of matching problems, each with its own set of objectives and constraints, including assignment problems, stable matching, and bipartite matching. Furthermore, researchers have continued to explore applications of graph matching, particularly in the areas of computer vision, multimedia, and machine learning. Their work aims to provide a concise and systematic overview of the state of the art and recent developments in graph matching.
