Time Domain Characterization of a System by using CW Measurement Results Without Phase Information

In EMC tests, systems are usually described by their frequency response(FR). However, only using the magnitude of the FR, a system cannot be described completely, because the phase information is unknown. This paper discusses the method of estimating the time domain characteristic (for example, the pulse response) of a system from the magnitude of FR without knowing the phase information. A minimal phase system is used to approximate the real system. The Hilbert transform is first used to relate magnitude to phase of the FR, then a discrete transfer function model is estimated to describe the system. Examples are given to show the applications of this method in system modeling, signal reconstruction and time domain response prediction.
