EMC-Aspects of Industrial Data Communication Networks

C. F. Post · 1999

Minor EMC-failures in industrial process control networks may have severe safety and cost implications due to possible accidents and production loss. Apart from (legal) emission and immunity equipment requirements, the correct implementation of EMC-cabling measures in the field is particularly critical. This paper describes the major EMC aspects of industrial data communication networks, based on EMI-trouble shooting experience in more than twenty process control installations, ranging from (petro)chemical plants and paper production lines to food processing industry. A step-bystep trouble shooting procedure is presented and a summary of EMC-installation measures is given.
