Prevalence of disability among people is rising globally as a result of ageing, drug overdoses, and other calamities. Communicating with people happens to be necessary and indispensable where people affected by Locked in Syndrome (LIS) is deprived of. LIS prevails to be erratic neurological syndrome where the lower brain and its brain stem is heavily damaged due to any accidents or even over dosage of drug intake. LIS is classified into three based on their effects. They are classic LIS, incomplete LIS, total or complete LIS. In which the lower portion of the brain and brainstem is damaged. The person with locked in syndrome is completely aware of the surroundings and remains conscious. The proposed system uses electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to enable Brain Computer Interface (BCI). The EEG signal is extracted from the brain using OpenBCI EEG acquisition equipment. The Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) and an Event Related Potential (ERP) component, P300 are extracted from the digital EEG signal and classified using software. These patterns are used to pass commands to the software model. This enables communication between affected individuals and fellow human beings. In this paper a promising methodology for a BCI based communication system enabling the locked-in syndrome affected people to communicate with others effectively by using the EEG signal is developed.
