Scale-Invariance and Short Distance Behavior in a Simple Model

The short distance behavior of quantum field theory is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and important problems, both from the point of view of consistency of the theory as well as for its experimental implications (for example) for high-energy cross sections. Therefore, any general idea which promises an insight into this problem should be greatly appreciated, A number of physicists offered the suggestion that there is a connection between the scaling group (more generally the conformal group) of the zero mass limit of a massive theory (provided that conformed invariance holds in that limit) and the short distance behavior of vacuum expectation values. Wilson,1 although not being the first one, spelled out these speculations most clearly by claiming the existence of an "anomalous simension" of fields.
