Network Coding (NC) has emerged as a groundbreaking technique in communication networks, offering significant improvements in data transmission efficiency by allowing nodes to encode and combine incoming data before forwarding it. This is particularly beneficial for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which involve frequent and large-scale data exchanges among sensor nodes. In WSNs, where energy efficiency is a critical concern due to the limited power resources of sensor nodes, NC can substantially enhance the broadcast efficiency by merging multiple data streams using appropriate coding methods. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of Network Coding (NC) and its application in WSNs, emphasizing the substantial energy savings and performance improvements it offers. Through a detailed comparison of various information exchange methods within a clustered WSN structure, both analytical and simulation results are discussed, demonstrating that NC-based data exchange can dramatically reduce communication time, leading to a significant decrease in energy consumption per node. The results highlight the potential of NC as a key strategy for optimizing energy efficiency in WSNs, which is crucial for prolonging network lifetime and ensuring sustainable operation in realworld sensor deployments.
