Symbolic AI Approaches: Wolfram|Alpha and Context-Free Grammar

Wolfram Wolfram · Wilmott · 2024

This series of four articles will take a deep dive into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) with a view of its current and potential applications in finance. In the first article, we will take a look at some approaches to AI that preceded the more recent large language model (LLM) paradigm ushered in by the release of GPT-3 by OpenAI in 2020. Specifically, we will look at how some earlier paradigms, such as context-free grammar, helped natural language understanding and underpinned products like Wolfram|Alpha. We will also discuss how the strengths of these approaches can bolster the reliability and accuracy of machine learning-based AI systems, which will be discussed in the next article.
