A Systematic Review of IoT Botnet Detection Techniques

Anagha Patil, Arti Deshpande · 2024

Botnets are the evolving cyber threats that are used to compromise the network. Looking at the amplified use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, cybercriminals have shifted their targets and exploited IoT botnets for various attacks such as distributed denial of service attacks, eavesdropping on people&s;s conversations, spoofing, manipulation of the stocks, astroturfing, content scavenging, etc. Because of their continuously evolving nature, IoT botnets are hard to detect over traditional and signature anomaly detection methods. Therefore, this chapter describes mechanism of IoT botnet, their goals, various botnet architectures available in the literature and the probable risks posed by IoT botnets with the rise in IoT malwares. Further, this chapter assesses detection approaches using a methodological classification, and elaborates role of deep learning in IoT botnet detection. This review can assist researchers in understanding the harmful effects of malicious bots and can reinforce the current countermeasures.
