A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a passive planar structure, made of several sub-lambda spaced reflective elements, whose electromagnetic characteristics and in particular the phase offsets are imposed when reflecting impinging waves can be controlled and adaptively changed [ 1 ]. Figure 6.1 depicts a high-level view of the RIS communications architecture.
