In the frame of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment (RAISE) project, we are developing innovative, automatic and smart solutions to be used directly in the field for marine monitoring. Specifically, our study focuses on the development of three biological early warning systems (EWS) based on biofilm electrochemical activity, crustacean adult motion and planktonic organisms swimming behavior to further monitor aquatic health status, providing a real-time signal when pollution or other stressors may occur in the natural environment. In this study, we report the preliminary results on biological EWS alterations after exposure to contaminants and polluted environmental samples, in order to verify and further propose these systems for future monitoring surveys as predictive tools to assess the anthropogenic impacts in the marine environment
