With widespread deployments of phasor measurement units in power systems, the localization of power oscillations has become feasible via energy-based method. However, the performance of energy-based method greatly lies in extracting precise oscillation components. Therefore, the paper proposes an improved variational mode decomposition-based Energy (IVMDE) method. Initially, Fast Fourier Transform is employed for identification o f o scillation f requency, o ffering a reference for subsequent component extraction. The IVMD is then utilized to extract oscillation components from synchrophasor measurements, which are subsequently employed in computing IVMD-Energy for each branch. Moreover, the slope ratio of IVMD-Energy is employed as an indicator of the energy flow direction in the power system, auto-mating the process of determining the source of oscillations. The results of simulation using WECC 179 test case data verify the effectiveness of IVMDE method.
