Machine Translation, Large Language Models, and Generative AI in the University Classroom

Sourojit Ghosh, Srishti Chatterjee · 2024

This chapter explores the usage of machine translation (MT), generative artificial intelligence (GAI), and large language models (LLMs) in university classrooms. We apply a care ethics lens to pedagogical practices, examining how educators across disciplines can uphold their responsibility to foster intellectual development while safeguarding ethical considerations. Arguing that this concept is in line with a pedagogy of care, we highlight potential use cases, pitfalls, and best practices across disciplines—in the curricular pedagogy of the sciences and the humanities—and critically analyze specific MT, GAI, and LLM tools whose popularity has surged over the past few years. Specifically, we focus on students and populations at the highest risk of experiencing the harmful impacts of such tools, such as international and minority-language students. Using the care ethics framework, we map out ways that educators can anticipate, avoid, mitigate, and address these harms.
