Security challenges in IoT and smart devices

Akashdeep Bhardwaj · 2024

The security threats and vulnerabilities related to the Internet of Things (IoT) in relation to smart devices are thoroughly examined in this chapter. It begins by detailing the fundamental architecture of IoT systems, including the various components that interact to facilitate communication and data exchange. This structural analysis offers valuable insights into the interconnected nature of devices, networks, and cloud services, highlighting potential entry points for cyber threats. The chapter then transitions to focus on the unique security challenges faced by IoT and smart devices. These challenges range from insufficient authentication mechanisms, default passwords, and insecure interfaces to the complexities introduced by the rise of remote working environments. These vulnerabilities are made worse by the increasing number of connected devices, which makes a strong case for the necessity of strong security measures. Four case studies of significant IoT security breaches are shown to highlight the practical ramifications of these issues. These case studies reveal the diverse tactics employed by cybercriminals and their impacts on users and organizations alike. They serve as important lessons in understanding the necessity for vigilance and robust defensive strategies in this rapidly evolving landscape. Ultimately, this chapter aims to equip readers with critical knowledge and actionable insights for security challenges presented by IoT and smart devices. By emphasizing both the architectural foundations and specific vulnerabilities, as well as drawing lessons from past incidents, readers will gain a comprehensive understanding of IoT security.
