Mapping Models to Optimization Problems

Marty Moran · 2024

This chapter presents the discussions of a series of major business/technical problems and examples of how optimization can be used to generate solutions for those problems. The Optimal Improvement Project and Storage Optimization are both primarily plant-level optimization problems. Maintenance Plan Options, Spares, and Task Optimization are primarily done at the Process Unit level or sometimes across multiple process units. The determination of the process unit availability target needs to be made in concert with all other process units in the plant at the same time – at least, those that make the major products. The comments made already for the Optimal Improvement Project will also apply to Storage Optimization, since these problems are highly intertwined with one another. Maintenance Plan Options Optimization can be performed on a single piece of equipment within one unit. The scope of spares optimization could potentially be enormous.
