Considerations in the MST design for the new digital SAT suite of assessments
Thomas P. Proctor, Oliver Zhang · 2024
This chapter describes several aspects of the development work behind the transition of the College Board’s SAT Suite of Assessments from paper-and-pencil linear tests to digitalized multistage tests (MST), including characteristics and rationales of the MST design, considerations in psychometrics and test development to execute and evaluate the design, as well as the relevant pilot studies to support the initial operational release of the new digital program. The chapter highlights a few key issues and solutions in terms of pretesting for item pool, test length and timing, automated form assembly, scoring methodology, and score scales. While not an in depth research report, this chapter aims to provide a practical overview of how MSTs are implemented for a major testing program.
