Ubiquitous Search and the Internet of Things

Liese Zahabi · 2024

This chapter provides an overview of ubiquitous computing and explores devices and frameworks that allow for search separate from the computer, including Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) and other smart appliances, and a discussion of the implications of their use. The rise of technologies like Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and micro-sensors that allow for sophisticated location tracking has created the space for different kinds of searches. How does the experience of search change when using a device like the Amazon Echo via auditory inputs and outputs, and what are the design implications? As search moves away from a screen-based experience into our physical environments using spatial and location-based search, how do design considerations need to change? This chapter will explore the ways different platforms work together to allow users the ability to search across various hardware and software frameworks, in different environmental contexts using different types of inputs.
