Blockchain-Based Identity Management for Secure CIoT Interactions

Jagjit Singh Dhatterwal, Kiran Malik, Kuldeep Singh Kaswan · Advances in computational intelligence and robotics book series · 2024

Cellular Internet of Things (CIoT) combines sophisticated machine learning with IoT, which produces smart ‘things' that can make decisions on their own. However, identity management in CIoT contains major difficulties especially in terms of security and privacy. Blockchain is found to provide a solution that improves the secure communication in CIoT environments efficiently. In this chapter, the author describes how blockchain can be used to manage identities for CIoT as well as the advantages and frameworks of blockchain. This chapter covers the field of CIoT, its characteristics regarding identification requirements, the concept of blockchain, and the characteristics of blockchain applications for CIoT identity management systems. It goes further to discuss on architectural frameworks for blockchain, application of smart contract, and real life examples in CIoT to expound on how blockchain transform CIoT space. Therefore, analyzing these elements, this chapter is intended to suggest the detailed instructions for using blockchain to safeguard interactions within CIoT. The extant identity management solutions do not fare well when it comes to scaling up while simultaneously addressing escalating security threats and compatibility challenges across the complex CIoT context. The following are the problems which are going to be solved aware in this chapter by proposing a blockchain-based framework for identity management. The emphasis will therefore be on self-sovereign identity models and Decentralized Identifiers as they provide privacy of personal data. This chapter also finds from the analyses and the cases of the application of blockchain-based identity management frameworks that security and efficiency in CIoT systems are greatly enhanced. The processes of identity verification by smart contracts and the applications of cryptographic methods enhance security and privacy. In the same manner, the chapter presents and discusses the performance measurement, legal aspects, and possibilities for future investigations with the aim of painting the picture associated with the future outlooks and obstacles of the examined field.
