Using Biometrics for Authentication in e‐Health Systems
Omessaad Hamdi, Mohamed Aymen Chalouf, Amal SAMMOUD · 2024
Authentication is one of the essential security services required to protect e-health systems by guaranteeing the confidentiality of medical data and respecting patient privacy. This chapter presents authentication mechanisms using biometrics, and describes a multi-factor authentication protocol suitable for e-health systems. It also presents the architecture of an e-health system, and lists some of the attacks that can threaten the security of e-health systems, as well as the security services available to counter these attacks. The chapter focuses on one of these security services, authentication. There are three authentication factors as follows: memory, hardware, and physical body. Authentication using biometrics is based on a number of characteristics, such as fingerprint, face, retina and voice. Biometric systems can be classified into two categories: a unimodal biometric system, and a multimodal biometric system. Several multifactor authentication approaches have been proposed to secure communications in e-health applications.
