Introduction of a Standardised Testing Methodology for Electronic Components in Pressure Tolerant Systems

This paper presents a standardized methodology for testing electronic components in pressure-tolerant systems (PTS). Quartz crystal oscillators, implemented on a standardized printed circuit board and housed within a fluid-compensated pressure-tolerant hull, were subjected to high-pressure conditions to assess their performance. The study focused on oscillators with frequencies of 8 MHz, 16MHz, 32MHz, and 50MHz which provide the clock basis for any computational task. Our findings indicate that lower frequency oscillators (8 MHz and 16 MHz) demonstrate superior stability and reliability under pressure compared to higher frequency oscillators (32 MHz and 50 MHz), which exhibit increased variability and amplitude instability. This introduced methodology underscores the importance of a systematic testing approach for enhancing the design and performance of pressure-tolerant electronic components in subsea applications.
