Task Model Mapping

Richard M. Luecht · 2024

Task model maps (TMMs) are integrated test specifications that serve multiple purposes. First, a TMM is a highly detailed content and cognitive test blueprint. The map aligns to evidence requirements to justify proficiency claims (Chapter 2) and comprises a distribution of complexity-oriented task models that provide that evidence (see Chapter 3). Second, a TMM provides a statistical distribution of task model families based on their difficulties and is proportional to an Item Response Theory target test information function (TIF) that designates the required allocation of measurement precision across a score scale. Third, a TMM provides an integrated item bank/inventory specification that documents present and future item production demands in terms of the required content, cognitive, and psychometric characteristics of the items. This chapter discusses some methods for designing TMMs for different test purposes as well as documenting the alignment with the construct map and evidence models discussed in prior chapters.
